The American state was historically unique in its time for being born of ideals. Its founders were at once among the most forward-seeing and backward-gleaning people of the age. Today we mostly think of the future as a corrective of the past, but the ideals of the American revolution were ancient ones, and those ideals were inseparable from the founders’ reading of the classical past.
