Steen Madsen: Historical Baskets Through the Ages

  • North House Folk School 500 West Highway 61 Grand Marais, MN, 55604 United States (map)

Basket-making is an ancient craft. Sites in the Middle East show that weaving techniques were used to make mats and baskets at least as early as 8000 BCE. Basket expert Steen Madsen has spent a lifetime studying the history of basket weaving in Europe. For the last quarter-century, he has been a full-time basket maker, growing willow, teaching basket making, educating apprentices, and weaving baskets. Much of his weaving work is for museums, film and theatre productions and for artists and collectors. Please join us for this fascinating, history-wide look into the art of the woven basket, recorded live in Denmark and available HERE.
