“The most dangerous creation of any society is the man who has nothing to lose.” James Baldwin's lengthy essay "Down at the Cross" (frequently called “The Fire Next Time” after the book in which it first appeared) dramatized the seething discontent of the 1960s. The essay landed Baldwin on the cover of Time magazine in 1963, making him an international spokesperson for civil rights and a celebrity noted for championing the cause of Black Americans.
