Seneca: On Anger, Book III

  • St. John's College (map)

"Mankind is born for mutual assistance, anger for mutual ruin: the former loves society, the latter estrangement. The one loves to do good, the other to do harm ; the one to help even strangers, the other to attack even its dearest friends." Seneca was an Hispano-Roman Stoic philosopher and tragedian. His influence on later generations is immense. During the Renaissance he was "a sage admired and venerated as an oracle of moral, even of Christian edification; a master of literary style and a model of dramatic art."
