George Wythe: The Declaration or The Law

  • The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (map)

George Wythe was the first American professor of law, a noted classics scholar, respected Virginia judge, and founding father. The first of the seven Virginia signatories of the Declaration of Independence, Wythe served as one of Virginia's representatives to the Continental Congress and the Philadelphia Convention. George Wythe was a model of Enlightenment values, communicating them as mentor to Thomas Jefferson, John Marshall, and Henry Clay, and as elder statesman to the generation of American founders. Join Mr. Wythe in July of 1776 as he considers the language and philosophy of the Declaration HERE.
