Tuesday Trades: Live with the Harpsichord Makers

  • The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Williamsburg, VA USA (map)

The harpsichord is a keyboard instrument with a distinctive, ancient sound. Most likely invented in the late Middle Ages, by the early 16th century harpsichord makers in Italy were making lightweight instruments with low string tension. A different approach was taken in the Southern Netherlands starting in the late 16th century, where harpsichords used a heavier construction to produceda more powerful and distinctive tone. Those Flemish instruments served as the model for 18th-century harpsichord construction in other nations, including colonial America.
