Anna Bon and Women Composers of the 18th Century

  • The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Williamsburg, VA USA (map)

While amateur music making was encouraged among colonial women in the 18th century, professional female musicians had more avenues of opportunity in Europe. Anna Bon was trained at the renowned Pieta Orphanage in Venice and became a court musician at Bayreuth. Child prodigy Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre was a favorite at Versailles throughout her long career. Mademoiselle Duval was known as the composer of her opera Le Genies, ou les Caracteres de l’Amour, written when she was just eighteen. Join Colonial Williamsburg’s Governor’s Musick chamber ensemble as you discover the music and lives of these three talented women who took up music as a profession HERE.
