The Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (literally the "Upanishad of the great forests") is one of the Principal Upanishads and one of the first Upanishadic scriptures of Hinduism, key to various schools. Estimated to have been composed around 700 BCE, it is a treatise on the centrally important concept of Ātman (Soul, Self), and includes passages on metaphysics, ethics, and an intense yearning for knowledge that deeply influenced various Indian religions.
