Citizenship is the status of a person recognized under the custom or law of a sovereign state as a participating member of that state. Each state is free to determine the conditions under which it will recognize persons as its citizens, and the conditions under which that status will be withheld or withdrawn. Please join Thomas Jefferson, here interpreted by the nation’s leading scholar-interpreter, Bill Barker, for this timely discussion of what it means to be a citizen of a republic, how to honor that role, and who was included in, or excluded from, American citizenship during his lifetime.
