Bookbinding is the process of physically assembling a book from an ordered stack of paper sheets that are folded together into sections or sometimes left as a stack of individual sheets. The stack (signature) is then bound together along one edge by sewing with thread through the folds. The outer boards are then often covered with leather for beauty and longevity. We might take books for granted today, but in colonial America only the rich could afford a library. Binding books — especially fancy ones — was a specialized and time-consuming craft.
