The Famous Barber of York

  • The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (map)

The first barbering services were offered by North Africans around 5000 BC, employing instruments made from oyster shells and sharpened flint. In ancient culture, barbers were highly respected individuals, often serving also as physicians and priests. Join us live from the shop of Caesar Hope, an iconic figure in 18th century Williamsburg, as he shares his incredible life’s story of slavery, freedom, and enterprise as the famous Barber of York HERE. Caesar will take questions from the audience, concluding in actor interpreter DeAndre Short sharing his experiences portraying this remarkable man.
